Community members are invited to put their best foot forward and walk away from smoking.

The Hīkoi ki te Ora event is being run by Ngā Kete Mātauranga Pounamu Charitable Trust at the Invercargill Velodrome on Saturday, 11.30am-1.30pm.

Whānau and friends can take part in laps around the velodrome walking track, with every lap earning an entry into a prize draw.

Southern Stop Smoking service manager Teina Wilmshurst said events like Hīkoi ki te Ora were important because they brought people together in a supportive space where taking that first step towards quitting did not feel overwhelming.

"When whānau and communities get behind each other, it makes the journey to becoming smoke-free feel more achievable."

Kōrari Māori Public Health team kaimahi Nadine Young said the kaupapa was about securing a smoke-free future for mokopuna.

"We encourage whānau to come and move their tinana, while learning more about becoming smoke-free."

The event will also feature information and resources on smoking and vaping, support services for those wanting to quit, fun games and quizzes for all ages and spot prizes.

Hīkoi ki te Ora is part of the wider World Smokefree May campaign, empowering communities to make positive health choices in a supportive environment.
