A Invercargill-based company is launching a new trading card game and app this weekend.

It’s a physical card game called TAKTYK developed by James Earl Aitken Wards over the last seven years.

His organisation, Your Corps, aims to reach youth through video games and these two projects are his latest endeavours.

"Both projects are focused on creating positive long-term pathways for rangatahi through gaming, technology, creativity and community participation," he said in a statement.

The game combines chess-like thinking with creativity and is designed to challenge young people in literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and decision making he said.

His card game will also be available in the Grace Street Project, a community hub which is set to open sometime in the future.

"Through TAKTYK, rangatahi are equipped to continue engaging in ongoing community events, building sustained social connection, confidence and long-term participation."

He hoped the game would strengthen community bonds by providing face-to-face spaces for young people to meet and connect.

There was also an economic benefit as it is designed and manufactured locally he said.

"[TAKTYK] is contributing to economic outcomes through local youth employment in manufacturing, packaging, and delivery roles."

They also pride themselves on using "environmentally conscious and compostable packaging whenever possible".

The game is being launched alongside companion app the Corps App, which was developed in collaboration with students from Southern Institute of Technology.

Mr Wards described it as "everything together in one place".

"It allows people to discover free events, connect with E-sports, TAKTYK battles, technology meet ups and community activities across Southland."

The app will be directly integrated with the Your Corps organisation and will support the events and charitable endeavours they run.

The launch event for TAKTYK and the Corps app will be at Invercargill Central this Sunday at 10.30am.

Attendees will be able to watch lives matches, learn the game and purchase a limited edition starter deck for $60. — Allied Media
