The "Art for Leisure" sale last weekend was a resounding success, with a massive turnout from customers who left with affordable, beautiful artwork.

The event is held every year, allowing the students at the "Art for Leisure" class at the Southern Institute of Technology to sell off their art pieces they made through the year.

Held at the SIT campus in Gore, the weekend sale was one for the history books, as it had one of the best turnouts in the history of the sale, with over 150 people coming through the doors.

Over 40 artworks created by the class were sold over the two days, and artist Helen Keith called the sale one for the history books.

"It’s been a resounding success. I think it’s the [best ever year] for the numbers," she said.

People flocked in, enjoying the multitude of different art pieces and projects on display, all at affordable prices, all made by the students.

For those artists, Mrs Keith said it was a great chance to clean the canvas and get something even more valuable than money — recognition for their artistic success.

"These would probably be collecting dust, maybe in a crack behind the couch [laughs], so it’s fabulous they found someone who likes their paintings so much they want to hang it on their wall.

"Does that not make you want to come back next week?" she said.

The proceeds from the sales are returned back to the artist, to recompense the paints, the varnish, not to mention the hours put in and the classes attended.

"For them to be able to get something back, for all of us too, the best feeling you could have is somebody wanting to hang up your painting," she said.

Tutor Julie Duncan said she was very happy with the weekend, which was not only a great success but also maybe inspired a few people to give art a bit of a go.

Mrs Duncan thanked the community for showing such support, and also SIT for allowing them to use the space, calling their patronage "wonderful".

"I’ve got to give kudos. This [space] has been given to us for our art class, it’s just very very good of them," she said.
