The Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade is turning 100 this weekend, with a centenary celebration and a new revised history book detailing the volunteer group.

For 100 years, the brigade has celebrated its anniversary on not a specific date, but rather the third Saturday in November, with the big day coming up this weekend.

Members past and present will be flocking to Mataura as the centenary celebrations begin in a big way, with a big weekend planned to celebrate and congratulate the long-lasting volunteer organisation.

A registration and get-together on Friday night will open up the celebrations, followed by photoshoots on Saturday and a formal dinner of all past and present members.

The UFBA honours night will then be held, where members will be presented with awards in recognition to their service to the community, with a casual cleanup and lunch on Sunday to tie a bow on the historic event.

It will also be run in combination with the "Motoring Mad" event, and the fire brigade having a presence at the car show which is also happening on Sunday.

It is not only a weekend of recognition, but also one of remembering history, with a revised history book of the station also being presented to memorialise the occasion, working on from the previous version for the 75th anniversary.

Centenary committee chairman Neville Phillips said it was a remarkable feat to compile together stories, names, and the history, with former volunteer and life member Robin South taking up the task.

"They stood up and took the arduous task of rewriting the book. It’s been a mission, it’s unbelievable the amount of hours they’ve spent doing that.

"I don’t think people understand the research and work, he’s done a very, very good job," he said.

Mr Phillips as well as other committee members such treasurer Brent Herbert have been hard at work doing up the station and preparing for the weekend, and Mr Herbert said it was going to be a great one.

"It’s a big, big deal," he said.
