Last weekend, Moffitt (15), a year 12 pupil at Otago Boys' High School, won the national junior decathlon title, scoring 5275pts, out-scoring the Canterbury duo of Quinn Andis and Joshua Bull, who finished second and third respectively.
"It was a good comp. I was quite stoked with the efforts," he told the Otago Daily Times of winning the New Zealand title.
Moffitt was back in action at the weekend contesting no fewer than eight Otago championship events, the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, shot put, discus, pole vault and 4x100 relay. He won gold in six and silver in two.
Outgunned in the 100m, to kick start his 2019 Otago championship title collection, Moffitt had to settle for second to club mate George Vare (17), who stopped the clock at an impressive 11.09sec. Moffitt was second in 11.53sec, and Joshua Friend completed a clean sweep for Hill City-University, third in 12sec flat.
"I felt quite good, but was a
bit slow out of the blocks. It picked up throughout the race," he said of his 100m race on Saturday afternoon.
"I was happy with the time. It was a PB."
Following the 100m Moffitt was in action in men's under-18 shot put competition, winning the first of three titles in a 2hr period, with a put of 13.23m.
Shortly afterwards, he lined up to contest his specialist event, the 110m hurdles and clinch a second title, clocking 15.22sec. To round out Saturday afternoon, he was the lead-off runner for the Hill City-University 4x100m relay team that won the title in 45.58sec. Other members of the winning team were sprint rivals Vare and Friend, along with Liam Kerr.
Despite the cool southerly change for the second day of competition yesterday, Moffitt continued his golden run, winning the men's under-18 pole vault with a height of 2.70m, 10cm clear of second placed Cole Gibbon (Taieri). Club mate Vare relegated him to silver in the 200m, clocking an impressive 22.77sec. Moffitt stopped the clock on 23.45sec, and Ben Smith (North Otago) was third in 24.33sec.
But as a hurdles specialist, it was a no-contest in the 300m hurdles, as he showed the field a clean pair of heels, crossing for his fifth title in 40.65sec.
In his final event of the championships Moffitt completed his golden run when he won the men's under-18 discus title, throwing 34.23m, to complete his championship bag.
