Records broken at Caledonian

Zharna Beattie pulled out an impressive performance to set a new Otago record at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

The Taieri athlete threw 41.07m on her second attempt to win the open women’s discus and break the girls’ 16-years record in the process.

It was a 44cm personal best and leaves her ranked third in the country in the under-18 age-group.

Taieri’s Ben Baines also had a record-breaking day in the throwers’ circle.

His 8.41m set a new national para F38 men’s under-17 record in the shot put.

Also impressive in the shot put was Hill City-University’s (HCU) Hugh McLeod-Jones.

He threw 13.34m to edge Taieri’s Jade Zaia by half a metre, while also edging Zaia in the discus with 40.21m.

In the javelin Holly Robinson (Taieri) threw 40.76m to win the women’s competition, while club-mate Ethan Walker impressed with 56.68m.

Meanwhile in the long jump HCU Paralympian Anna Grimaldi had her best outing since coming back from a major foot injury.

She jumped 5.42m to win the women’s event, the fourth-best winning distance of her career.

Ariki’s Shay Veitch won the men’s competition with 6.12m.

On the track Ariki’s Ruaidhri Brosnan won a tight 800m from HCU’s William Scharpf.

Brosnan ran 2min 01.35sec to edge Scharpf by three-hundredths of a second.In the Otago 4×400m relay championships Taieri and HCU claimed a senior title each.

Taieri’s team of Flynn Murdoch, Liam Turner, Felix McDonald and Will Campbell ran 3min 32.78sec to edge HCU in the men’s race.

However, HCU’s team of Sophie Napper, Madaline Spence, Sophie Miller and Rebekah Greene got one back in the women’s race, winning in 4min 05.35sec.

In the 100m HCU’s Timothy Horton and Taieri’s Rosie Elliott ran 11.15sec and 12.25sec to win the men’s and women’s competitions respectively.

They were also the fastest in the 200m with times of 22.66sec and 25.14sec.

In the 300m hurdles Tara McNally (Taieri) and Cameron Moffitt (HCU) clocked in at 46.12sec and 40.22sec to shoot to the top of the under-18 national rankings for the year.

Moffitt’s 15.54sec also took him to the top of the under-18 110m hurdles rankings.
