The Logan Park road race launched the Otago secondary schools cross-country series yesterday.

Hosted by the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association, the event was the first of four due to be held over the coming weeks and was contested by 109 pupils.

The junior boys and girls, as well as senior girls, ran a 2.5km course around the perimeter of the Logan Park, Caledonian and University Oval area.

The senior boys did two laps to make for a 5km race.

Gabby Kakahi helped Taieri College get among the placings, finishing third in 9min 12.02sec.

John McGlashan College's Josh Hou won the junior boys race in 9min 45.42sec, but was pushed by William Scharpf, of King's High School, and Joshua Potter, of Otago Boys' High School.

In the senior boys race, Otago Boys' High School's Nathan Hill dominated the field in 14min 17.32sec.

His nearest competition was King's High School's Drew Cairney, who finished in 14min 29.02sec, while Zach Mason, also of King's, was third in 15min 23.15sec.
