Aitcheson extends stint with Nuggets

Josh Aitcheson has re-signed with the Otago Nuggets.

The 22-year-old was a regular starter for the side last year as it claimed the title in last year’s National Basketball League showdown.

He averaged 10.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and shot an impressive 42.7% from beyond the arc.

In the final he posted 16 points and hit the final free throw to clinch a 79-77 win.

A quality shooter who can also score at the rim, he brings useful length to guard spot at 1.98m.

Aitcheson is a Dunedin-local, having attended King’s High School and been a key player for Otago age-grade teams growing up.

He has also been key in the Mid City Magic’s streak of four consecutive championships in club basketball.

Aitcheson joins nine others to have been confirmed for the roster.

Fellow locals Sam Timmins, Richie Rodger, Darcy Knox, Matthew Bardsley and Aaron Roydhouse will all turn out for the side.

Young big man Akiva McBirney-Griffen moves south after turning out for the side in last year’s showdown, while Pafe Momoisea is also in the squad after attending university in Christchurch.

Imports Isaiah Moss and Geremy McKay complete the confirmed 10.

The season begins on April 24 when the Nuggets host the Wellington Saints at the Edgar Centre.
