Great players make those around them better - and Jillian Harmon is doing that for the Otago Goldrush.

Harmon, the Tall Ferns star, helped Otago to three wins from four games in the first round of the Women's Basketball Championship in Auckland over the weekend.

After its win and loss on the opening day, the Goldrush beat the Taranaki Thunder 51 30 on Saturday, before crushing the Rotorua Lady Vols 71-34 yesterday.

Harmon, appearing for her new province for the first time, really flexed her muscles in the third game, torching Taranaki for 16 points and 16 rebounds.

''She's just a lovely player,'' Otago coach Todd Marshall said yesterday.

''For our guys, it's pretty exciting to be around someone like that who has played so much top basketball and can read a game so well.

''Our other bigs, especially, are finding it so enjoyable to play alongside her because she attracts so much attention and they get a heap of opportunities. So we've seen Grace Allan and Natalie Smith and those guys really stepping up.''

Smith had eight rebounds against the Thunder, and Allan had 11 points and nine rebounds against the Lady Vols.

Marshall sat Harmon for most of yesterday's game, allowing Anita Snowdon (18 points, five steals), Soraya Umaga Jensen (14 points) and Grace Love (12 rebounds) to shine.

Marshall said it was shaping to be a competitive league. Canterbury, Waikato, Wellington and Nelson were all looking tough.

Otago's next game is at home, against Canterbury on May 10. That is followed by tournaments in Christchurch (May 15-17) and Porirua (June 4-6).
