They notched a second win in as many weeks on Tuesday night, riding a big second quarter to a 53-48 victory over Ajax in women’s club basketball.
The Falcons in patches showed how dangerous they can be.
However, inconsistency plagued their game.
After a second quarter in which they scored 19 points to take a 33-24 halftime lead, they managed just four points in the third quarter — and went a full 10 minutes of game time without a point.
But when they gave up their lead, they rallied to take it back and close out the game.
And that was essentially how it went.
Alexa Duff led the Falcons with 15 points, doing the majority of her damage in that second quarter, while Janet Main hit four three-pointers to have 14 for Ajax.
It was a sloppy start from both teams, but a pair of three-pointers to Brittney Young gave the Falcons a 13-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Ajax hit back though, and Nanaia Haua banked in a triple of her own to pull back to 14-11 at quarter-time.
Duff came to life after the break, hitting two three-pointers and a transition layup in the space of two minutes.
Main hit a pair of baskets to hit back for Ajax, but Duff responded with another corner three-pointer to keep the Falcons ahead at 28-22.
Annabelle Ring (11 points) added a triple from the top, extending the Falcons’ lead to double-digits just before halftime.
Kyra McEntyre and Jenna Lapham both added baskets after halftime, extending the lead to 37-24.
At that point, the Falcons’ offence went cold.
Initially, it was not that they were not generating good shots, they just were not making them.
Meanwhile, Ajax slowly hauled in the deficit.
Natalie Ivamy contributed three baskets in the run, before Haua hit a mid-range turnaround followed by another three-pointer to take a 39-37 lead early in the fourth quarter.
At that point, the Falcons rallied.
Zoe Melville got to the line and hit a free throw, before a restoring the lead with a mid-range jump shot.
McEntyre hit a pair of free throws, before a three-pointer from Ring made it 45-39.
Main hit two triples down the stretch, pulling Ajax back to 47-45 with two minutes to go.
But Melville hit once again, this time from the high post, before Charlie Pollard finished in transition to make the lead six again.
Main added a final three-pointer, before Duff sealed the game at the line for the Falcons.
The game between the South Pac Magic and Varsity was not played.
The league now takes a three-week break for university holidays, returning on July 15.
