The South Pacific Magic is showing it can close out the tight ones when it matters.

It beat Varsity 65-62 in Tuesday night's semifinal of the women's premier club competition and will play Ajax in the final on August 26.

The win was its second narrow victory in a row, having beaten the Andy Bay Falcons by a point in last week's quarterfinal.

That puts the Magic in with a chance to defend its title, having done enough to make it through despite a late-season dip in form.

A big second half was pivotal for the Magic.

It outscored Varsity 23-12 in the third quarter, Soraya Umaga-Jensen pouring in two triples and scoring 10 points in that period.

She finished with 21 points and was well supported by Sophie Johns and Natalie Visger, who had 19 and 14 respectively.

Johns was influential down the stretch, scoring 12 of the Magic's last 13, after it went into the final quarter holding a two-point lead.

Earlier it had been Varsity that made the better start.

It shot out to a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, Jeanie Pattison scoring nine points early, before Estelle Schuler put in Varsity's last three baskets of the quarter.

That lead was extended in a low-scoring second quarter, as Varsity went to halftime up 34-25.

Foul trouble became a factor, though, and Varsity found itself having to manage Pattison, Grace Love and Caitlin Glue to keep them in the game.

By the end of the third quarter the Magic had taken a 48-46 lead, which it was able to keep safe.

Pattison led the way with 15 points for Varsity, while Schuler added 12.

Glue chipped in with nine, Tara Clement had eight and Love finished with seven.
