Hoiho need to be ‘on the ball’

First things first - focus on tonight.

Then move on to Sunday.

The Southern Hoiho have the doubleheader in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa League this week and come up against the Mainland Pouākai in Christchurch tonight.

They then return to Dunedin for a rematch against the Northern Kāhu, whom they met at the Edgar Centre last Thursday.

The Hoiho were "dealt to" by the Kāhu in a 91-70 loss to the defending champions.

They do, however, have the edge over the Mainland Pouākai this season, having beat them 78-69 at Cowles Stadium in round four.

Hoiho coach Todd Marshall knows that does not mean anything in the context of this tough season.

"They’ve really come on and they’re playing good basketball and very gelled," Marshall said.

"We’re really going to have to be on the ball.

"It’s going to be a tough game. Physicality-wise, we match up well, but we’re going to have to be on the game defensively, because they’ve got some firepower.

"It’s just going to be a repeat of every week."

Some of that firepower comes in the form of American McKenzie Forbes, who scored a whopping 39 points in the Pouākai’s 97-89 win over the Tokomanawa Queens last week.

She leads the league in three-pointers made (29), while team-mates Esra McGoldrick leads the competition for blocks (16) and Mikhaela Cann has the most assists (67).

Southern will be without starter Zoe Richards, who had a hard fall last week, and Samara Gallaher, who is sidelined under concussion protocols.

Natalie Chou finished with 21 points and five steals last week, while Chelsea D’Angelo added plenty from the bench and top-scored with 23.

The Hoiho return home after tonight’s game and their focus will switch to the Kāhu, who are a "different kettle of fish" to the Pouākai.

Tauihi has additional imports this season and Marshall said the league had been exactly as he expected - uncompromising and tough.

"It’s been really enjoyable with the level and the quality of the teams. It’s been quite a good challenge."
