The Mid City Magic has got its season off to a winning start.

It claimed a convincing 90-69 win over Varsity on the opening day of Dunedin club basketball at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.

Point guard Darcy Knox led the way with 29 points for the winning side as it opened up a second-quarter lead Varsity could not pull in.

Boasting a fast, athletic team, the Magic proved difficult to stop in transition.

It pushed the ball well and wore down a short-handed Varsity team, which only had seven players.

The Magic was also without one of its stars in Josh Aitcheson, but showed it still boasts more than enough threats.

It used its small ball line-up effectively, doing a good job of containing Varsity big man Stanley Muru during those periods, then exploiting the mismatch at the other end.

Muru was Varsity's best and looks likely to one of the league's top big men.

He led the team with 19 points and rebounded well, proving strong inside while showing the ability to shoot from mid-range.

The Magic opened up the first major gap in the scoreline when Brent Cheshire drilled a corner three and followed it up by finishing a transition lay-up.

That took the score to 13-6, but Varsity would not go away and made the most of several offensive rebounds.

It clawed the deficit back, but 12 points from Knox were key to giving the Magic a 23-21 lead.

Benoit Hayman had been in foul trouble for most of the quarter, but made an immediate impact on his return, helping reopen the scoring gap to 32-23 early in the second quarter.

Varsity was able to stay in touching distance through Muru and guard Emerson Watson before the Magic switched to its small ball line-up.

At that point it increased its tempo and got out to a 51-37 lead at halftime.

It held that lead for much of the third quarter, before it again went small towards the end of the quarter to extend its lead to 70-52.

The Magic went deeper into its bench in the final quarter as it continued to widen the margin.

The City Rise Bombers rode a 33-point performance from veteran Steve Robinson to claim a 83-68 win over the Andy Bay Falcons.

The Falcons fought back to an even game after going down 17-3 early, but an 18-point third quarter from Robinson was too much to overhaul.

In the early game, the St Kilda Saints beat the Magic Lions 78-61, each being without star guards, James Ross and Micah Lepaio respectively.
