The Mid City Magic has made it three titles in a row - but this one came by the closest of margins.

A Darcy Knox free throw with two seconds left secured an 89-88 win over the St Kilda Saints in the men's club basketball final on Saturday.

It capped a 22-point performance for the Magic point guard, who was afterwards named the league's most valuable player.

St Kilda had a significant size advantage over the Magic and looked to use it early.

Aaron Roydhouse, who made a large impact in last week's playoff against the Saints, was missing, as was inside unit Samson Aruwa, who tore his Achilles earlier in the season.

The Saints used bigs Connor Coll and Lawson Morris-Whyte to dominate inside in the first quarter.

The Magic gained some footing at the end of the quarter, finding shooters Mitchell Hughan and Matt Dukes on the three-point line.

Magic big man James Scobie forced some shooting fouls and made all four free throws to push the Magic into a 22-21 first-quarter lead.

The second quarter was taken over by St Kilda as guard Jamie MacDonald, who notched 25 points, stepped up to take control.

He led his team and scored from all areas of the court, bringing massive energy to the Saints and supporters.

Darcy Knox picked up the Magic's slack but, without any strong backing, could not push ahead to lead.

The Magic still finished the half close behind at 50-45.

Point guard James Ross helped the Saints to a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter.

He found MacDonald and veteran shooter Matt Gillan, who had 11 points between them through that stretch.

But Knox rallied and started a strong run against the Saints' lead.

Along with Josh Aitcheson, he forced a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter to go into the fourth up 67-65.

The fourth quarter was a true battle between two very talented teams.

Aitcheson knocked down a three-pointer to put the Magic up five, but St Kilda guards MacDonald and Ross stuck with it to bring it back to 73-73.

Magic shooters Hughan Dukes and Brent Cheshire made three massive threes to regain a small lead.

But Ross fired back with a three of his own to keep his side in it.

That opened the door for St Kilda youngster Michael Ruske to make an contested pull-up to tie the game at 86-86.

With 25 seconds left, both MacDonald and Ross forced Magic's hand and went to the line for free throws.

But neither could find the bottom of the net and missed all four.

A Magic mistake very late on the clock gave Coll the opportunity to again tie the match with 15 seconds on the clock.

But Knox attacked and was able to get to the line to make one of two free throws to end the game 89-88 in Magic's favour.
