The students finished strongly to beat the South Pac Magic 75-64 on Tuesday night, remaining women's club basketball's only unbeaten team after two rounds.
It held a slender lead for most of the fourth quarter, before three-pointers from Caitlin O'Connell and Tyra Jamieson sparked a run for Varsity to score the final nine points.
O'Connell was immense down the stretch.
The point guard, who finished with nine points, initiated an offence in which the ball moved and generated good looks.
But more importantly, her ability to both react and stay in front defensively helped Varsity to two crucial stops.
Forward Abby Harris was similarly influential, scoring nine of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, while Leila Anesi also had a strong night with 14.
For the Magic, Millie Simpson was typically dangerous attacking the hoop, finishing with a game-high 21 points and providing the Magic offence with a constant threat.
An early onslaught gave Varsity a 24-14 lead late in the first quarter, but the Magic hit back with a run of its own.
Sarah Joy Aruwa and Dayna Turnbull both provided multiple baskets to erase the deficit, before Natalie Visger finished on an offensive rebound to put the Magic up 38-37.
That lead was shortlived, though.
Varsity went on a 10-1 run of its own midway through the third quarter, Celeste Newsome coming up with a three-point play and a triple to spear-head the students to a 53-44 lead.
Visger and Simpson dragged the Magic back into the game again, before a Gianna Leoni three-pointer tied the scores at 55-55.
But Varsity got back a lead it would not relinquish.
Simpson hit a pair of free throws to take the Magic to within two at 66-64, before O'Connell and Jamieson effectively iced the game with their three-pointers.
Ajax turned it on late to beat the Andy Bay Falcons 71-54, claiming its first win of the season in the process.
It had been close most of the way, and Brittany Richards (10 points) hit a three-pointer to pull the Falcons to within three at 49-46.
At that point Ajax's star duo of Samara Gallaher (24 points) and Zoe Richards (20 points) took over to help Ajax pull away to comfortable win.
Alexa Duff led the Falcons with 17 points.
