Bowls: Dunedin duo set to feature in singles

Dunedin bowlers Carolyn Crawford and Pam Walker are expected to dominate the singles at the New Zealand Disabled Bowls championships in Dunedin this week.

Both had successful international debuts at the world championships in Wellington last February.

Crawford won the gold medal in the singles and Walker was fourth. She finished in the same spot in the pairs with Peter Wylie (Oamaru).

Wylie is the third Otago bowler competing in the four-day championships that start at the St Clair Bowling Club today.

Crawford has been in outstanding form over the last two seasons and has now won 23 Bowls Dunedin women's titles, one short of the record of 24 titles held by Gaynor Reid.

Her first highlight came early last year when she won the New Zealand women's pairs title with Ann Muir (Northland) when they beat world champions Jo Edwards and Val Smith 22-15 at Mosgiel.

Last December, Crawford competed in her first New Zealand disabled bowls championships at Hamilton when she beat Lynda Bennett (Waikato) 21-6 in the singles.

It was a significant win because Bennett won the silver medal in the singles at the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow in 2014.

Crawford (55), a compliance officer with Inland Revenue in Dunedin, also won a silver medal in the triples at last year's New Zealand championships.

Crawford's left arm was paralysed after a medical misadventure at the age of 4 but she joined the New Zealand Disabled Lawn Bowlers Association only last year.

At the disabled section of the New Zealand open bowls championships last season, Crawford and Walker won the gold medal in the pairs and Walker was runner-up in the triples that was won by Wylie's team.

Teams for the pairs and the triples are drawn by lot.

They will be played over 12 ends with no time limit. The singles winners will be the first to 21 points.

Singles section play will be held today and the pairs tomorrow

. The triples will be held on Saturday and the semi-finals and finals of the singles and pairs will be held on Sunday morning.
