Bowls: Rare husband-wife double

It was rare and may have even been a first for a husband-and-wife combination. Sharon McCaw (St Clair) and husband Craig (Kaikorai) both won Bowls Dunedin titles on the same day.

It happened on Dunedin greens earlier this month when Sharon won her first Bowls Dunedin title as lead in the St Clair team that beat Green Island 20-10 to win the open fours.

It was the second title for Gaynor Moss, the ninth for Trish Marr and the 20th for Carolyn Crawford.

Craig and Geoff Wilson beat fellow club members Regan Larkin and Callum Horwell 19-5 in the open pairs. It was the 11th centre title for Wilson and the sixth for McCaw (47).

''It was exciting,'' Sharon said.

''I told Craig that I would drive for him so he could have a few drinks to celebrate his win.

''Craig told me that `If you win, I will drive for you'. We went out for tea at Robbies and celebrated. It was really good.''

The first title was special for Sharon.

''I will always remember it. I don't think Carolyn will forget her 20th.''

Sharon (49) only started playing bowls five years ago.

''For a very long time I was a bowls widow and said I would never play. I thought it was the most boring sport I'd ever seen,'' she said.

She was busy with other things at that time and brought up three children.

Sharon used to play hockey, squash and golf but injured her knee and can no longer play these sports. She represented Central Otago at hockey and played in the K Cup.

Her bowls game improved dramatically when she joined the St Clair club and was coached by Carolyn Crawford, who completely changed her style.

She also received valuable advice when she played in Ann Muir's four with Crawford at the national championships in Dunedin last month. Crawford and Muir won the pairs title.

Sharon had won four and Craig 32 Eastern Districts titles but they needed to play in the Dunedin competition to lift their standard.

Sharon was selected in the St Clair sevens team in her first year in the club and Craig has made the Bowls Dunedin sevens team.

Two Dunedin bowlers reached significant milestones when they won their fifth centre title and gold star last weekend.

Margaret Hoad was lead in the Green Island team that beat Marion Hambleton (Outram) 22-15 in the women's open triples final. It was the 13th title for skip Faye Cosgrove and the 19th for Lyn Rance.

Kelvin Budge reached his milestone in the Kaikorai men's team that beat Terry Scott (North East Valley) 17-12 to win the open triples.

It was the first title for Jim Mahuru and the 22nd for Kernaghan.
