Women bowlers are now making their mark in PBA bowls and have the opportunity to advance up the ranking list at the weekend.

The Potters World Indoor Singles qualifying event gives bowlers the chance to make the national final and compete for an all-expenses paid trip to the United Kingdom in January.

The Potters World Singles is the big event of the United Kingdom PBA series.

The latest national ranking list shows how women bowlers are advancing up the ladder, with two listed in the top 20.

One of these is Carolyn Crawford (St Clair) who is ranked 20th-equal and will be keen to advance this weekend.

The mentally tough Crawford is the best-performed woman in Dunedin PBA bowls. She will face Dave Archer (Taieri) in the first round on Saturday.

Other noted Dunedin women bowlers in the field at the weekend are the Bowls Dunedin Female Bowler of the Year Sue Hodges (Outram), Beth Brown (Taieri) and Trish Marr (St Clair).

Marr will face Otago University student Connor Muir (Clyde), who is in his first year in the PBA and lasted five rounds at the Queens Birthday tournament.

Brown will face Simon Nyhof (Hawea), a former New Zealand junior pole vault champion, who is ranked 15th on the national ranking list.

Forty bowlers have entered the two-day tournament starting on Saturday afternoon.

The favourite is the evergreen Ken Walker, who tops the national ranking list. He will face Joko Susilo (Andersons Bay), ranked 11th, in the first round.

Others in the top 20 are Regan Larkin who is ranked sixth, Peter Wilson (Kaikorai) ninth, Dave Hodges (Taieri) 12th, Duane White (Forbury Park) 14th, Bob McAuley (South Otago) 16th, Ross Munro (Fairfield) 19th and Doug Thomas (Andersons Bay) 20th-equal.
