Sophie Pascoe won New Zealand's first medal in the pool at the Glasgow Games this morning, comfortably taking out the women's 100m breaststroke SB9 final.

It is the first swimming gold New Zealand has won at a Commonwealth Games since Anna Simcic took out the 200m backstroke at the Auckland Games in 1990.

Pascoe finished two seconds ahead of Australia's Madeleine Scott. Erraid Davies of Scotland claimed the bronze medal.

The other Kiwi in the field, Nikita Howarth, finished in ninth spot.

Meanwhile, Glenn Snyders qualified for tomorrow's 50m breaststroke final after finishing third in his semifinal. World record holder Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa broke the Games record in a time of 26.80, 0.63 seconds ahead of Snyders.

Samantha Lucie-Smith failed to make the women's 100m freestyle final after a fifth placing in her semifinal.
