All Black's son scores century in last wicket stand

A former All Black's son has delivered an impressive century in tough circumstances for Otago at the under-19 national cricket championships.

Benji Culhane, son of former first five-eighth Simon, scored 123 runs off 94 balls against Auckland in Lincoln yesterday.

That included the bulk of the runs in an incredible 153 10th-wicket stand with Ben Seavill (29 not out).

Otago had been limping at 127 for six when No8 batsman Culhane arrived at the crease.

Three wickets followed for the next 11 runs, leaving Otago at 138 for nine.

From there Culhane, a wicket-keeper batsman, hit 12 fours and eight sixes to put the team back in a competitive position.

He was run out on the last ball of innings.

It was not enough to get Otago over the line, Auckland claiming a four-wicket victory with three overs remaining.

Simon Culhane was part of the All Black team that made the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

The Southlander scored a world record 45 points against Japan in a 145-17 victory during the tournament.
