A roundup of premier club cricket games played in Dunedin at the weekend.
Albion 226/7 beat Green Island 224 by three wickets
That must have felt like a relative failure for Hugo Bogue.
The rising opener was chasing a third consecutive century — possibly unprecedented in Dunedin premier club cricket, but we stand to be corrected — when he took the crease for Albion at Sunnyvale.
Bogue got nearly halfway there, blasting 48 off 30 balls, including five fours and three sixes, before being caught and bowled by Mayank Malhotra.
His rapid knock at least set the tone for the Eagles to push to a three-wicket win over Green Island.
Chasing 225 for victory, Albion got there with eight deliveries to spare.
Joshua Olliver (39) and Volts duo Luke Georgeson (31) and Matt Bacon (32) made handy contributions, leaving Mason Clarke to belt an unbeaten 40 off 47 balls (three fours, one six) to ensure victory was achieved.
Jacob Cumming was the pick of the Green Island bowlers with two for 30 off nine.
Earlier, the Swamprats handed debut caps to new Otago recruits Jack Boyle and Troy Johnson, along with North Otago addition Lloyd Fellowes.
Green Island’s first seven batters all reached double figures but only opener Brad Kneebone (42) passed 30.
A middling total was on the cards until Joel Meade rattled on 58 off 40 balls (four fours, four sixes) to get the home side to 224 before being dismissed in the 49th over.
Bacon led the Albion attack with three for 28, backed up by James Brown (two for 36) and Sithum Niluminda Bandara (two for 44).
North East Valley 133/2 beat University-Grange 129 by eight wickets
Llew Johnson struck the ball hard and far as he led North East Valley to a comfortable win at Logan Park.
Johnson smashed 77 off 30 balls to lead the Swans to victory, chasing 130, in just the 13th over.
The Volts basher had five fours and seven sixes in his entertaining stay at the crease, while Otago team-mate Thorn Parkes chipped in an unbeaten 25 off 15 balls.
Kaleb McKay was the pick of the Valley bowlers as University-Grange were dismissed for 129 in the 30th over.
McKay took three for 24 off eight overs and got good support from brother Kaleb (two for 21).
Taieri 312/8 beat CDK 156 by 144 runs (DLS)
Opening batter Ruben Clinton scored his second century in the space of three rounds to guide defending champions Taieri to a comfortable win at Tonga Park.
Clinton appears to be well in form to push for another opportunity with the Volts this summer.
He blasted 134, including 10 fours and five sixes, to power Taieri to a formidable total of 312 for eight.
Clinton got good support from Jack Kelly (51), and they combined for 111 for the opening wicket.
Henry Scott (three for 36) gave CDK hope as he ripped through the Taieri top order when given his turn with the ball, but Zac Cumming (60) and Kevin Loggenberg (35 not out) cranked up the scoring again.
Thomas O’Connor took some stick, conceding 80 runs off his 10 overs, but grabbed three late wickets.
CDK had a DLS-adjusted target of 300, so needed somebody to go big.
Jamal Todd got to 32 and O’Connor 34, and Harry Sixton hit seven fours and a six in his excellent 56 off 62 balls, but the Hounds were dismissed for 156 in the 35th over.
Toby Hart shone with four for 29 for Taieri, and Ben Lockrose had three for 21.
