Century in each dig for Wilson

Otago captain Brad Wilson is ordering up a livelier pitch after scoring consecutive centuries in the match against Central Districts in Nelson this week.

It is the first time in his career the 31-year-old has scored a century in both innings of a match and it is actually reasonably rare. The previous Otago batsman to manage the feat was Aaron Redmond during the 2012-13 season.

But any sense of satisfaction Wilson felt was overshadowed by the result. While he scored 111 and 117 not out, the game was drawn and the pitch at Saxton Oval proved instrumental in the stalemate.

''Obviously, it was a pretty flat wicket, so it was good to cash in,'' Wilson said.

''It is always nice to get a hundred, and two in a game is pretty special.

''It is disappointing when there is not a result. That is sort of dictated by the wicket a lot.

''I'd definitely rather have it [the pitch] a bit spicier and see a good game of cricket than have them all like this. It was not particularly fun to bat on either. We don't want to be preparing too many of these wickets.''

Otago resumed on 117 for none and with a lead of 231 runs. However, heavy rain overnight left the surface unsafe and play did not resume until after lunch.

There was just not enough time left in the game to establish a defendable lead and take the required 10 wickets in an afternoon.

For that reason, Otago felt it was better to rest its seamers than declare and provide Central with an opportunity to burgle a win.

The match was called off with Otago 238 for two. Wilson was able to advance his overnight score from 44 and post his 13th first-class hundred. It is his third century in his past four first-class innings.

Hamish Rutherford, who scored a century in the first innings, was unable to add much to his overnight scored and perished for 73.

Ryan Duffy missed out and Neil Broom was left undefeated on 27. Otago's next assignment is against Auckland at Eden Park No2 ground. The game begins on Saturday.

In a remarkable match at Hagley Oval, Northern Districts rebounded to beat Canterbury after conceding 445 runs in the first innings.

The visiting side replied with 415 and then Scott Kuggeleijn took six for 60 to help restrict Canterbury to 165 for nine. With opener Chad Bowes unable to return to the crease after he was struck on the helmet earlier in the innings, Northern was left chasing 196 for victory.

Daryl Mitchell notched an unbeaten 51 to help complete a wonderful five-wicket win.

Wellington's experienced top order guided the Firebirds to a six-wicket win against Auckland at Bay Oval in Mt Maunganui.

Chasing 275 for the win, Michael Papps (57) and Luke Woodcock (98) put on 106 for the first wicket.

Stephen Murdoch backed up from his century in the first innings with a solid 31, while former Black Cap Hamish Marshall scored 39.

Veteran seamer Brent Arnel set up the win with an eight-wicket haul during the match, while spinner Jeetan Patel was instrumental as well with seven wickets in the game.
