Cricket: Five-wicket bags not enough

Jamie Murley and Sam Jones celebrated fine individual performances but had to suffer collective defeat in franchise club cricket on Saturday.

Both grabbed five-wicket bags but ended up on the losing side of one-day games.

Murley took five for 34 for the North West Bears in their 96-run loss to the Saddle Hill Steamers.

Jones's five for 49 could not stop the Eastern Beaches being beaten by 16 runs by the Central Knights.

Saddle Hill Steamers 252 beat North West Bears 156 by 96 runs Hamish Rutherford and Jordan Sheed ensured the Green Island-Taieri combination posted a competitive total at Brooklands.

Rutherford smashed 60 and Sheed fell for 49.

Rutherford dominated a first-wicket partnership of 47 with Ant Harris, and Sheed played the anchor role in a third-wicket stand of 56 with Scott Simpson.

Ben Kidston added 32 down the order but the Steamers were prevented from posting a massive total by Jamie Murley, who mopped up the tail to claim his five-wicket bag.

Charlie Hendry (57) and Dan Power (43) gave the Bears a fighting chance with a good partnership of 92 for the first wicket.

But their dismissals sparked a collapse, with the Bears losing 10 for 64.

Russell Ritchie (four for 38) and Mark Joyce (three for 27) did the damage with the ball for the Steamers.

Central Knights 197 beat Eastern Beaches 181 by 16 runs Runs were in short supply at Tonga Park.

Several batsmen made starts but none managed to pass 50.

James Fuller and Stephen Jakeway each scored 35, James McMillan reached 27 and Mark Collie got to 26 as the Central Knights scraped through to 197.

Like Murley, Jones came back to tear through the tail, his five for 49 coming off 9.2 overs.

The Eastern Beaches made a solid effort in reply through Sean Eathorne (44), PJ Cairns (44) and James Hogg (36).

But the rest of the order collapsed as part-time Central bowler Michael Bracewell claimed the excellent figures of four for 32 off 10 overs.
