New Zealand cricket great Sir Richard Hadlee will be the special guest speaker at a luncheon next month to farewell the Otago Volts cricket team.

It will be the official send off for the Otago team to compete in the inaugural Champions League twenty/20 tournament in India.

Otago's participation in the tournament against teams from the top cricketing nations will be the highlight of the long history of Otago cricket.

"To mark this milestone in Otago cricket we are holding a lunch to officially farewell the team before they embark on their ground-breaking trip," Otago Cricket marketing and events manager Andy McLean said yesterday.

"We hope to use this event to raise money for the Otago Cricket Trust that funds the retention and development of local cricketing talent in the Otago-Southland region."

Otago Cricket has been fortunate to procure the services of Hadlee, who broke the world record for test wickets on the same ground where Otago will play its opening game, in Bangalore on October 12.

Players in the Champions League squad will be spread around the tables.

"The Otago Volts will be in Dunedin preparing for the Champions League next month and we are . . . putting together a function that will provide an opportunity for the team to meet the public . . . before they leave for the most significant event in the history of Otago cricket,"McLean said.

Tickets to the luncheon with Sir Richard Hadlee cost $90 and a table of 10 costs $800.

They are available from Otago Cricket.
