Cricket: Metro shares honours

Dunedin Metro shared the spoils with Canterbury Country in the 48th South Island primary schools' cricket tournament in Ashburton last week.

The tournament has been a breeding ground for many a future champion with the likes of Sir Richard Hadlee, John Wright and Chris Cairns gracing the fields.

Closer to home, the McCullum brothers Brendon and Nathan, and Ken Rutherford are some of the other big names to have honed their skills at the tournament.

The Dunedin side played four games, was unbeaten and took first innings points in every match.

The team also had five players named in the tournament team - Josh Preston, Sam Angus, Eamon O'Brien, Taine Bayly and Will Hunter.

Taine, an all-rounder, was Dunedin's leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps.

Sam is a rapid opening bowler and one to watch.

Josh is a promising wicketkeeper-batsman, Will a useful all-rounder and Eamon an opening batsman.

Dunedin last won the tournament in 2000 with the likes of Sean Eathorne and Kieran Noema-Barnett in the side.
