Cricket: Otago has to make two changes

Otago has been forced to make two changes to the side which beat Central Districts by 43 runs on Sunday.

Strike bowler Neil Wagner split the webbing on his bowling hand while fielding and will miss Otago's next one-day game against Northern Districts in Invercargill tomorrow.

Likewise, all-rounder Sam Wells has been forced to the sidelines.

Wells has been struggling with a knee injury and an X-ray has revealed bad news.

"He has been carrying a bit of a knee injury and unfortunately they've done an X-ray and he has a chip on the bone," Otago coach Mike Hesson said.

"We are not exactly sure ... whether he is going to need an operation or not.

"But he'll definitely be out of cricket for a while."

Wells struck some good form for Otago in the Plunket Shield but was injured during a one-day trial match.

As for Wagner, the outlook is more promising.

"We are taking it on a game-by-game basis, really.

"We'll leave him out for this next game and see how [the cut] heals," Hesson said.

The good news is while Wagner and Wells are out, experienced duo Warren McSkimming and James McMillan return.

McMillan has been sidelined with muscle strain and McSkimming took some time off to attend to his new role as a father.

English import Darren Stevens has also been included.

Stevens played for the Volts in the twenty/20 campaign and will be available for the remainder of the one-day competition.

Hesson said he was pleased with how the team had started the one-day campaign.

"We have fought hard from difficult positions for our two wins and shown a lot of character in doing so," he said.

"Senior players like Craig Cumming and Nathan McCullum have made valuable contributions and set the example for the rest of the squad.

"We now find ourselves right in the hunt ... and look to upcoming games in Invercargill and Oamaru to cement our place in the top half of the points table."

Otago team to play Central Districts:

Aaron Redmond, Michael Bracewell, Neil Broom, Craig Cumming (captain), Darren Stevens, Darren Broom, Nathan McCullum, Derek de Boorder, Warren McSkimming, Nick Beard, Craig Smith, Ian Butler, James McMillan.
