Cricket: Otago opener notches double-hundred

Otago opener Hamish Rutherford has scored his maiden first-class double-hundred today, the milestone helping the Volts into an impregnable position against Wellington at the University Oval in Dunedin.

Rutherford, whose previous highest score was 118, has easily dominated the Otago scorecard, with fellow opener Craig Cumming's 56 the next highest score. Volts skipper Derek de Boorder was closing in on 50 when Rutherford passed 200.

After resuming today on 101, Rutherford has moved through to 204 in a Volts total of 373 for 5, giving his team a lead of 261 with five first innings wickets in hand on day two.

Otago dismissed the visitors for a paltry 112 yesterday.
