Cricket: Otago welcomes Redmond back

Black Caps top-order batsman Aaron Redmond will rejoin Otago for its Plunket Shield match against Wellington starting in Invercargill today.

Redmond was called into the New Zealand line-up as injury cover for Kane Williamson and ended up playing in the first test against the West Indies in Dunedin.

With Williamson reclaiming his spot, Redmond has returned to his province and will replace Ryan Duffy in the 12.

It is the only change to the Otago team which drew with Northern Districts last week.

Duffy has made a solid start to his first-class career with 95 runs at 31.66 in two games. But Redmond has been one of the form batsmen in the country during the past 18 months and is a key player in the batting line-up.

''It is nice to have him back. Obviously, we miss him when he is away,'' Otago coach Vaughn Johnson said.

''It is unfortunate he did not get another go with the Black Caps but that was probably the way it was always going to be.''

Wellington has stuck with the same 12 which almost pulled off a remarkable victory against Canterbury last week. Chasing 470, opener Michael Papps did his best to help his side reach the mammoth target with an unbeaten innings of 183.

He also contributed an unbeaten 44 in the first innings and is the competition's leading scorer with 454 runs in three games and an average of 151.33.

Despite the valiant attempt, No 11 Brent Arnel was bowled for eight, handing Canterbury a 10-run win.

There was also frustration for Otago in its match with Northern Districts. With no play possible on the opening two days, the Volts made a bold declaration at 93 for six, hoping Northern would follow its lead. Northern opted to build a substantial first-innings lead instead, batting on to reach 223 for eight. But by doing it, also took some time out of the game.

Otago was dismissed for 283 in its second innings but was able to hold on for a draw - just. Northern needed a further 30 runs with three wickets in hand.

''From our perspective it [the declaration] was the right thing to do with 210 overs left. We thought by batting 30 overs they would do the same. That would leave 160 overs which was enough time to bowl them out and enough time to generate a result,'' Johnson said.

Otago's Jimmy Neesham claimed his maiden five-wicket bag in the match, taking five for 65. And top-order batsman Jesse Ryder starred with the bat in the second innings, making a fighting knock of 80 from 163 deliveries.

''Jesse batted time, which he needed and we needed. He showed patience and played very well. He just continues his form that he has had all through the Plunket Shield.

''Neesham is trying to make a play for the one-day side, so I'm sure he will be keen to do well over the next couple of games.''

Two points separate Otago and Wellington on the competition table. Otago is in second place with 28 points, and Wellington has 26. Canterbury is on top with 37 points.

With a maximum of 20 points up for grabs each game, the table can change dramatically from week to week.
