Who knows which one of the 14 captains will hold the World Cup aloft when the title is decided on March 29 next year?

It is a lot heavier than it looks you know, but they ought to be able to manage the weight long enough for the photographers to get that iconic picture.

The real load, of course, will be shouldered by the army of volunteers who will help make it all possible.

The tournament is being jointly held in New Zealand and Australia and the drive to get volunteers involved is under way.

Regional volunteer co-ordinator Vicki Kestila is in charge of organising the Otago effort.

The University Oval is hosting three games in February and 220 volunteers are needed (about 4000 are needed nationwide).

Kestila said just under 100 people had already come forward to help with the three games in Dunedin and she was confident of filling the remaining slots.

''We'd like another 120. That would be awesome,'' she said.

''We're very confident. Dunedin people do volunteer which is great.

''I was involved with the Rugby World Cup and I also do the New Zealand Masters Games and just love the event side of things,'' she said.

''I just think volunteers are so important. We couldn't run it without them, actually.''

Kestila said that volunteers came from all walks of life but they had one thing in common and that was a desire to do something positive for the community and the sport.

The roles are diverse. Volunteers could be doing anything from providing transport to helping spectators to their seats.

''On our website there are job descriptions for everything.''

The best way to volunteer is to register online at the Cricket World Cup website.

Kestila said volunteers needed to be at least 18 years old and must pass a police check.

Interviewing will take place next month and training is in January.
