Barely anybody knew who Doug Bracewell was a few months ago but now he is a household name. The strapping medium pacer tore through the Australian batting line-up in a performance reminiscent of Sir Richard Hadlee's marvellous efforts 26 years earlier - which coincidentally was the last time New Zealand beat Australia in a test across the ditch.
Bracewell took six for 40 in a wonderful spell of bowling.
Australia had been cruising towards victory at 159 for two when Bracewell pounced, removing experienced trio Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey in the space of a few moments.
Opener David Warner threatened to swat his team to victory, and his undefeated innings of 123 was remarkable given the context of the game.
There were a few wry smiles in the New Zealand camp when Warner, not Bracewell, accepted the man-of-the-match award. But any bitterness was short-lived, the team enjoying its first test win against Australia since March 1993 and, arguably, its greatest test win since its nine-wicket victory against South Africa at Eden Park in March 2004.
First, the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup after a 24-year wait and now the Black Caps have beaten Australia on their turf. The whole country can breathe again.
