Cricket: Win built on Mostert's 10-wicket bag

North Otago recorded its second outright win in the zone four Hawke Cup elimination round when it beat Southland by 10 wickets at Milner Park yesterday.

North Otago won the toss and invited Southland to bat first on a greenish tinged wicket which produced variable bounce.

Francois Mostert struck immediately, taking the wickets of opener Jamie Glenn and first drop Harsh Visavadiya with his third and fourth deliveries.

Ryan Duffy (27) and Craig Smith (26) carried Southland through to 112 before the final wicket fell. Mostert claimed five for 44 and was well supported by Nathan Smith's three for 25.

North Otago struggled in the afternoon, losing Duncan Drew (10), Lachie Kingan (1), Stephan Grobler (5), Francois Mostert (3) and Jeremy Smith (3) with Ben Cant (53) holding the innings together for the home side to be 122 for six at tea before rain ended the first day's play.

Nathan Smith (26) and Brady Kingan (22) added 46 runs for the seventh wicket before both fell early on day two but North Otago captain Jordan Horrell (39) and Llewellyn Johnston featured in a ninth wicket stand of 48 before the wicket fell at 191.

Johnston (23 not out) and Andrew Grubb added some icing with 20 runs for the last wicket to give North Otago a first innings lead of 99 runs.

Bowling for Southland, Jonathan Osborne took four for 58 and Jamie Glenn took three for 46.

The North Otago bowlers dominated Southland's second innings, dismissing the side for 119 with only opener Jamie Glenn (30) and Craig Smith (28) showing any resistance.

With the ball, Mostert grabbed a 10-wicket bag for the match, taking five for 41, with Ben Cant and Jordan Horrell taking two wickets each.

North Otago was left to score 21 runs for its second outright from just two games. It accomplished this without the loss of a wicket.
