NZ likely to include three new caps

Three players are likely to make their debuts for New Zealand against Bangladesh today.

The match at the University of Otago Oval is the first of six between the two sides over the next two weeks.

With Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson both out, Will Young and Devon Conway are expected to make their one-day international debuts.

But Daryl Mitchell may also get a run.

Mark Chapman and a pace bowler are likely to be left out of the 13-man squad.

Mitchell will bat in a middle order with the likes of Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell Santner. Matt Henry may be the quick carrying the drinks.

Young has been itching for a chance for years while Conway impressed greatly in the twenty20 series against Australia and will be out to make more runs.

The Black Caps like to include two pace-bowling all-rounders in the line-up and, with Colin De Grandhomme out injured, Mitchell is the obvious candidate.

Bangladesh has talked of the motivation and drive to win but that can only go so far in high-performance sport.

Bangladesh has not won once when playing the Black Caps in New Zealand.

It has not been victorious in any format in this country — playing 26 and losing 26 — although it did manage a win against Scotland in Nelson during the 2015 World Cup.

The team had a productive week in Queenstown working hard on its game and taking part in a intersquad practice match.

Skipper Tamim Iqbal thinks the series was a great chance to get a win on the board.

"We don’t have a great record in New Zealand so this is a great opportunity to turn things round. We have got some good young players and the team and I am very excited for them," he said.

New Zealand has been in form all season and will want to continue that.

The game is all but sold out and the weather forecast is for a partly cloudy day with a high of 17degC.
