The 31-year-old left-arm wrist spinner needs a further four wickets to bring up 100 first-class wickets for Otago.
That is a reasonably populated club, but Rippon is also closing in on 2000 runs for the province.
The South African-born player is sitting on 1624 runs, so there is still plenty of work to do. But he posted back-to-back half centuries against Canterbury last week and is in good form.
The 100 wicket-2000 run career double has proven elusive for Otago players.
Gren Alabaster is the only player to take 200 wickets and score 2000 runs for the province. He is alone at the top of the tree with 205 wickets and 2340 runs.
Former Black Cap and Otago Cricket Association board member Nathan McCullum nabbed 122 wickets and scored 2270 runs, while Otago convener of selectors Sam Wells scored 2588 runs and took 111 wickets during his playing days.
And that is it. That is the whole gang. Just three players have achieved the feat for Otago in 158 years.
Rippon is in a position to soon join them. He was unaware how rare the feat is but said it would be special to reach the milestone.
"It would mean a lot. I pride myself on my all-round skills," he said.
"I just want to contribute as fully as possible with bat and ball. I had not played much first-class cricket before coming to Otago, so I’ve sort of been learning as I go."
Rippon joined the Otago team in January 2017, initially as a replacement player. But he impressed with the ball and was contracted the following season.
He quickly signed a declaration of intent to qualify for New Zealand and the former Dutch international made his debut for the Black Caps in a T20 against Scotland in July. He did not bat but nabbed two for 37.
"I got the call-up in May, so I had quite a bit of time to prepare it and the tour was fantastic.
"We played in three great countries, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands and it was a really welcoming environment. I felt part of the team straight away.
"Through that experience I’d obviously like to be involved a little bit more. Hopefully, I get a few more opportunities in the future."
Rippon has been named in the Otago side that will host Northern Districts in a Plunket Shield game at the University Oval beginning today.
Josh Finnie has been called into the squad as cover for fast bowler Michael Rae, who has been ruled out with a calf injury.
The Volts started the season well with a healthy win against Auckland. Northern Districts slipped out of the noose in Mount Maunganui, but Canterbury proved too strong in Christchurch last week.
Rippon was the only Otago player to get past 50 and he was left stranded on 72 not out in his second dig.
That score took him past 2000 career first-class runs.
He has scored 352 in six games for the Dutch and has also turned out for New Zealand A and Western Province at first-class level.
