Tough task for youthful OBHS side

Otago Boys’ will open their First XI Cup campaign against perennial winners Christchurch Boys’ in Lincoln today.

The defending champions have won or shared the title 12 times since the tournament started in 1990.

But Otago Boys’ have enjoyed some glory as well. They won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.

A third title might be out of reach. Coach Hunter Kindley has set the bar a little lower.

"I think we've only got three year 13s, so if there's one thing I do know it is that year 13s are pretty important when it comes to secondary school sport," Kindley said.

"But in saying that, with so much youth in the team, it's bloody exciting.

"Obviously, they all want to do well. That's a given.

"But I think understanding that if we can compete and take games deep and give ourselves the best chance then who knows what happens on any given day in cricket, right?"

Otago Boys’ have a decent core.

Captain Luke Marsh will bat at No4 and he is an accomplished player who knows how to build an innings in 50-over cricket.

He will also send down some medium-pacers.

Explosive opener Ashton Hansen is an instinctive player with an aggressive streak and can take attacks apart.

Jack Ussher will spearhead the attack. He plays for University-Grange in the Dunedin premier grade and the right-armer has played in the tournament, formerly known as the Gillette Cup, before.

He can shape the ball both ways and has good variations.

Keeper Matt Parker will bat in the middle and is another key cog.

"I think we're going to lean on those kind of guys who have had a taste of senior club cricket and I think that's going to put their game in pretty good stead, to be honest."

"Christchurch Boys’ have always kind of been in and around the top and they set a really high standard, so it'll be a cool challenge to play them."
