Volts off the mark, thanks to weather

Otago is on the scoreboard.

It is not how the Volts would have hoped to pick up their first competition points in the Ford Trophy.

Arguably, they were in a fair position when their match against Northern Districts in Mount Maunganui was rained off.

The home team had got through to 209 for five after 41.3 overs when the weather deteriorated.

Both teams pick up two points each. Otago remains in last place in the competition standings.

Canterbury beat Central Districts by eight wickets in a top-of-the-table match in Rangiora, while Auckland posted a 54-run win against Wellington at the Basin Reserve.

The Ford Trophy will take a recess and resume again in February.

Otago have some catching up to do. But they started well yesterday.

Volts captain Luke Georgeson nabbed two for 25. He removed both openers, leaving Northern Districts 14 for two.

Captain Robbie O’Donnell (66) and Henry Cooper (35) put on 87 for the third wicket from 106 balls.

All was well again, but Cooper forgot how to defend and was bowled by Jarrod McKay.

The ball crashed into middle. Cooper’s feet were cast in stone in a textbook example of how to get out.

O’Donnell played some delightful shots down the ground and swung away Ben Lockrose for a couple of sixes.

But part-timer Jack Boyle (two for 29) claimed his wicket with a loose delivery down leg, which O’Donnell should have swatted for a boundary but instead hit to McKay at short fine leg.

Snehith Reddy (40 not out) and Kristian Clarke (31 not out) put on an unbeaten partnership of 63 to set their side up for the charge to the finish when the rain closed in.
