Auckland men the side to beat but women's contest wide open

Auckland-based teams lead the way in both the men's and women's national football leagues.

Auckland City has again emerged as the early form team in the men's league, while Northern has edged in front of Canterbury United as the women's league winds down.

It has been a strong start for Auckland City, which has claimed six wins from as many games to hold a two-point lead over Team Wellington.

Team Wellington, though, has played an extra game.

Its one loss came against Auckland City and it was held to a draw by Hawke's Bay United.

Eastern Suburbs slots in third, while Hamilton Wanderers are a surprise package with three wins and a draw in fourth.

That is a tremendous turnaround from last season's last-place finish.

It held off fifth-placed Canterbury United (eight points) with a 3-3 draw at the weekend.

One of its losses came against Southern United, which is in sixth place on seven points.

Given Southern has played one game fewer than everyone else - due to its match against Auckland City being abandoned - that leaves it well among the top-four mix.

Also on seven points is Waitakere United, while Hawke's Bay United, Tasman United and the Wellington Phoenix Reserves make up the bottom three.

Meanwhile, the women's title remains wide open.

Canterbury United (24 points) had led most of the way, but a bye last weekend allowed Northern to pass it, Northern's win over Central taking it to 26 points.

However, Northern has its own bye this weekend, meaning Canterbury will probably move to 27 points and reclaim top spot.

Auckland is in third spot on 21 points and should add three more this weekend when it plays WaiBOP.

Northern should win its final match against WaiBOP, which would give it 29 points and should clinch a spot in the final.

Auckland plays Canterbury on the final weekend, a match that could determine who the second finalist is.

Capital has proven tough opposition, but is out of the running on 17 points.

Southern started well but a rough patch through the middle has consigned it to fifth place on 10 points, with three wins and a draw.

WaiBOP and Central trail on three points each, each claiming a win against the other.

The league has two more weeks before the final.

Southern midfielder Georgia Brown was named the national women's league's player of the week. She scored two goals and was influential in the side's 5-2 win over WaiBOP.
