Club’s season starts in capital

Southern United is set to kick off its futsal season tomorrow.

The side will travel to Wellington to play the first three games of an abbreviated Futsal Superleague.

Rather than playing every team twice over four weekends, it will play a single round-robin and playoffs over two weekends.

It begins with a match against Central at 1pm today, followed by Capital at 7pm.

On Sunday it faces Canterbury United at 10am.

The side has performed well in the league in recent years.

It won the title in 2017 and a year later made the final.

Many of its regular top performers are back for another year.

Darren Hart coaches a team that includes veteran star Mike Sannum, who is also acting as assistant coach, while Carlos Hermann is another back.

It is without Fraser Hunter and Oban Hawkins from last year.

However, it has picked up football duo Adam Hewson and Tim O’Farrell, both of whom played for Southern in the national premiership last year.

The second weekend of the season will be held in Auckland from November 20-22.
