Football South will have to wait another year to end its losing streak in the national league.

Yesterday's 4-0 loss to Mainland Pride at Tahuna Park ensured the home side went a second consecutive season without a win.

The last time it walked away from a match with three points was October 27, 2013, when it beat New Zealand Development, 2-1, in Wellington.

A sole point from a 2-2 draw with Auckland is all Football South could muster this year.

During the season it found goals hard to score, finishing with just five goals for and 26 against.

Mainland Pride was far too clinical for Football South in blustery conditions yesterday, and had the game in the bag by half-time.

Most of the damage was done late in the first half, when the two-time defending champion scored three quick goals to turn the game on its head.

Football South defended well in the first 35min of the game, and should have gone 1-0 up when striker Una Madden found herself one-on-one with Pride goalkeeper Victoria Esson.

However, Madden blasted the golden chance straight at Esson, who gratefully grasped on to the chance.

To make matters worse, Mainland went straight down the other end and scored through Megan Shea, who fired past Tessa Nicol from a tough angle.

After looking anything but the competition leader before this, the opening goal spurred the Pride into action.

Gabrielle Brodie made it 2-0 when she got on the end of a corner a few minutes later, and Chloe Jones took it to 3-0 for Pride from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime.

It was a demoralising way to finish the first half for the home side, which enjoyed patches of dominance.

But Football South did not lie down - it came out and forced Esson into several brilliant saves, including a long-range effort from Madden which she barely tipped over the bar.

However, Madden and Co could not find the back of the net in the final game of the season.

Brodie put the icing on the cake with her second goal a few minutes from the final whistle on the counterattack to make it 4-0.

The win ensured Mainland went through the season undefeated, cementing top spot on the ladder.

The Christchurch-based side advances directly to the final, which it will host on December 6, as top seed.
