Football: Racial abuse allegation hearing adjourned

A hearing into an allegation of racial abuse by a referee at a Dunedin premier league game has been adjourned and details of any punishment have been kept under wraps.

A referee was alleged to have made a racially offensive remark at a game between Grants Braes and Roslyn Wakari, at Ellis Park on June 2. The incident report was filed by an independent referees' assessor, not by either of the clubs involved.

The chairman of Footballsouth, Dougal McGowan, confirmed a hearing into the incident took place on Monday night.

But he said both parties had to be contacted in writing with the findings of the hearing, and until that was completed, he could not release any information about it.

He declined to name the referee. Nor could he confirm that the referee had officiated in a Footballsouth division two match in Dunedin on Saturday, despite being stood down, pending the result of the hearing.

The hearing lasted more than three hours and McGowan said both parties had the right of appeal.
