Football: Schoolboys stay alive in Chatham Cup

Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) will take their place in the last 16 of football's Chatham Cup for just the second time after two goals from Dakota Lewis were enough to see off Mangere United 2-0 today.

Lewis struck once in each half as MAGS notched their third successive win over a northern league division one side but are guaranteed a sterner test when the fourth round draw is made on Monday, with only top flight northern league and US1 premiership clubs left in their region.

The schoolboys also reached round four in 2001 only to be beaten by eventual winners University-Mount Wellington.

The upset of the round came from Christchurch League side Avon, who toppled Mainland premier league contenders Nomads 5-4 on penalties after 120 minutes of normal and extra time finished goalless.

A Dave Richmond hat-trick helped current cup holders Central United to a 5-0 win to end the cup dreams of lowly Te Puke while the of run of Taupo is also over after their 0-2 loss to Auckland's Metro.

Melville will fly Waikato's flag in the last 16 after a 4-2 win over Papatoetoe, but there will be no central region sides battling for a quarterfinals place because all three of their sides dipped out.

Four-time winners Napier City Rovers lost 2-4 to fellow central leaguers Lower Hutt City, Hastings side Maycenvale United lost 2-5 to Wellington's Western Suburbs, while Miramar Rangers broke up their 10-hour round trip to Inglewood with an eight goal blitz led by a Peter Halstead hat-trick.

Aaron Burgess also bagged a triple as Dunedin Technical put four past Northern while Caversham left the home of their fierce rivals Roslyn-Wakari with a 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, two first round Women's Knockout Cup fixtures went to form today with Coastal Spirit thumping Avon 4-0 on the back of Hannah Wong's 20 minute hat-trick and Western edging Ferrymead Bays 2-1 away from home.
