Northern continued their fine form in their debut Southern League season with a fourth win in eight matches as they toppled Selwyn 3-1 at the Caledonian Ground.

Alex Dale opened the scoring on 35 minutes, with Josh Kotkamp getting his first goal of the season four minutes later.

Finlay Cotton pulled one back for Selwyn with 15 minutes to go.

Any thoughts of a Selwyn comeback though were quashed two minutes later when substitute Toby Orchiston scored to make the final score 3-1.

The win moves Northern into fifth place on the table, and if they win their catch-up match over Coastal, they will move into third.

After last week’s derby win over Northern, Dunedin City Royals faced the daunting task of entertaining the runaway leaders Cashmere Tech, who have won eight consecutive matches while averaging more than five goals per game.

The Royals did not settle quickly, and Yuya Taguchi opened the scoring for Tech after three minutes.

Prolific goal scorer Garbhan Coughlan made it 2-0 on 17 minutes, before Zander Edwards’ goal six minutes later meant the Royals faced an uphill battle.

The Royals did show glimpses of form, but failed to retain possession for sustained periods. That caused headaches for their defence, who had to deal with waves of swift, intelligent attacks that resulted in further goals to Taguchi and Coughlan before the break.

Coughlan claimed his hat-trick with his 19th goal of the season two minutes after the restart, making the score 6-0 with more than 40 minutes to play; the potential final score looked ominous.

However, the Royals did settle into some decent play and held Tech at bay until full time.

The win leaves Tech eight points clear at the top of the table, while the Royals remain in ninth on seven points.

Wānaka remain bottom of the table following their 2-0 home loss against Nomads.

With the game finely balanced, Nomads’ Joshua Colletts was shown a red card after only 22 minutes. However, this did not disadvantage Nomads as Kenny Willox and Flynn Holdem both scored before the interval .

• Northern Hearts remain unbeaten and top of the Southern Premiership men’s table following an entertaining 3-2 win over Northern.

Kowin Hancock opened the scoring for Hearts midway through the first half before Harris Wilkinson equalised for Northern to level it at the break. Hancock scored again, as did team-mate Bailey Chambers just three minutes later, with 18 left to go.

Northern’s Matt Fraser pulled one back with a penalty four minutes from time, but could not stop Hearts from claiming a fifth successive victory.

Coach Ryan Hanifin has the team from Timaru flying, as the last time Hearts had five wins was in the 2022 season.

Mosgiel are in second following a 2-0 win over the Royals. The deadlock was broken five minutes into the second half when Harvey Stevens finished off a good team move.

Matt Adye made the game safe when he too was the recipient of a good passing move that split the Royals defence.

Roslyn got its second win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Old Boys.

Nathan Wilkie got a brace after Ben William Davies opened the scoring after six minutes.

Green Island secured its first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with Queens Park. Matt Hanrahan gave Green Island the lead after 10 minutes when he received the ball deep in the penalty box and calmly picked his spot past Zane Green.

Park equalised after 55 minutes when Zac Owen-Gear got on the end of a loose ball following a corner.

Queen’s Park had to play out the last few minutes of the game with nine after two red cards.

• Roslyn-Wakari and University battled to a 1-1 draw in the women’s Southern League on Saturday.

Lili Clouston-Cain gave University the lead after 12 minutes before Yui Ishikawa nabbed the equaliser for Roslyn in the second half.
