Home advantage helped Otago University and Dunedin Technical trump South Canterbury opponents and sail into the fourth round of the Chatham Cup on Saturday.

University beat Northern Hearts 4-1 and Technical smashed Pleasant Point 11-1.

At the Caledonian Ground, University and Hearts had an arm-wrestle for the first half with both teams creating pressure and half-chances but neither able to open the scoring.

University made a good start to the second half when marksman Peter Rae won possession on the left edge of the penalty area. Rae dribbled laterally, shook off a Hearts defender and struck an accurate shot into the left-hand corner of the goal.

University doubled the lead in the 58th minute when Hearts failed to clear a defensive corner and Cory Glover drove home the loose ball to give the students a comfortable lead.

Henry Flood and Tom Morely worked tirelessly in the University midfield, and their efforts started to pay dividends as gaps appeared regularly in the tiring Hearts defence.

The students put the game to bed in the 69th minute when Tane Gent flicked on a back heel into the path of Rae, who timed his run perfectly to slot his second.

Rupert Mark completed the scoring in the 80 minute as he connected with a well-timed pass to beat the last line of defenders and finish with ease.

At Tahuna Park, Dunedin Technical outclassed a spirited Pleasant Point side.

The Point players got forward whenever they gained possession, but Technical used its class to capitalise on some soft defence.

Al Rickerby led Technical with four goals, and Tom McBride added a hat trick.

Meanwhile, Caversham increased its FootballSouth Premier League lead to eight points with a 2-0 win over Green Island at Sunnyvale.

Caversham striker Brett Clifford opened the scoring in the 39th minute, with a close-range finish, while captain Seamus Ryder made the win certain with some fast footwork and an accurate finish in the 68th minute.

Mosgiel claimed all three points with a 1-0 win over a weakened Roslyn-Wakari side at Memorial Park. Michael Abbott scored the winning goal.
