Irishman proving his goal-scoring potential

Danny Furlong has certainly been living up to his reputation.

The 28-year-old Irishman arrived in the South midway through last season, billed as a man who could help Southern United’s goal-scoring woes.

But even he never thought he would achieve what he did last weekend.

Trailing 1-0 against Waitakere United in the 92nd minute, Furlong scored two goals in three minutes to steal the most unlikely of wins.

It took his season total to four from four games and should have his confidence on a high going into tomorrow’s game at Sunnyvale against Hawke’s Bay United.

"As a player you do feel that pressure to be scoring, because you are the front man and you do get a lot of the chances, most of the chances in the team,’’ he said.

"So I’m usually the hardest person on myself if I don’t score.

"I usually kick myself and put a lot of pressure on myself to go out and score in the next game.

"So when you do find the net it’s a bonus I suppose. It takes a bit of pressure off you going into games.

"Last season I came in and scored six in 12 games, but I felt like I should have had a lot more.

"So to start the season off with four in four, it helps give you a bit of confidence and going to training you’re a lot happier.

"It’s a so much better feeling. Once you get your confidence you’re a different player I guess."

While he said the performance was not the best, he was "absolutely delighted" with the result and the finish to the game.

It was the first time he had been involved in a finish that remarkable.

"Not two goals. I scored one goal in stoppage time a few times," he said.

"But to score two in the last three minutes of the game — it’s definitely a first for me.

"Even to be involved in a game where you score two goals in stoppage time to win a game, it doesn’t happen too often."

Furlong arrived midway through last season and clocked over a year in Dunedin this week.

Alongside playing, he is working as a coach for Football South and enjoying the lifestyle of the city. He has not been home since arriving, although his mother and aunt visited a month ago.

"They’re kind of worried it’s that beautiful over here I’ll never come back," he joked.

However, he did hope to return over Christmas to see his family, if he could get time off.

Before then he would face the national football league’s only remaining unbeaten team, Hawke’s Bay United.

The side had claimed an impressive win over Eastern Suburbs, although Southern would enter the game with confidence after a week of training well.

Four weeks into the season Southern is placed sixth, with five points, although after tomorrow’s game it will have played four of the five teams above it.

The club’s youth team plays today at Tahuna Park at 2pm against Hawke’s Bay United.

Meanwhile, the women’s team has a bye.
