Promising show put off after crash

What looked likely to be the most entertaining game of this weekend's fixtures, Queenstown v Green Island, was postponed after the Green Island minivan went off the road in black ice.

A serious arm injury to youngster Matt Milton resulted in him being airlifted to hospital, but the other players, while shaken up, received just minor injuries.

Caversham downed Dunedin Technical 3-0 in the battle of two teams that are traditionally two of Dunedin's strongest.

Technical started strongly at Tahuna Park as coach Tony Martin's team looked to put Caversham under pressure.

Caversham showed why it is the perennial champion and weathered the storm, eventually taking the lead on 20 minutes when Andrew Ridden cut inside two players and drove a strong shot past the despairing dive of Technical's goalkeeper.

Jared Grove had the chance to make it 2-0 minutes later when he directed a header on to the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. But it was 1-0 at halftime.

Caversham was showing the benefit of playing a settled side without team changes and Technical was doing well in keeping Caversham at bay and trying to upset its rhythm.

Sam Collier was having a strong game upfront for Caversham and he scored a brace in the second half to ensure Caversham ran out victorious 3-0.

Jack Pirie scored early with a deft back heel to give Roslyn the early ascendancy on the way to a 3-1 win over University at Ellis Park.

With halftime near, University equalised, which had both coaches - Colin Thom, of Roslyn, and Darren Hart, of University - having to reshuffle their respective halftime talks.

University's structured and neat passing moves were unable to breach Roslyn's defence and Nathan Wilkie scored with a booming header for the second game in a row to give Roslyn the lead late in the second half. Tennessee Kinghorn then made sure all the points were secured for Roslyn with a simple tap-in goal late in injury time.

Southland's coach, Luis Paiva, felt disappointed to come away with only one point following a 2-2 draw with Mosgiel.

Southland enjoyed most of the possession and territory in the first half and took the lead when Hayato Waikano scored.

In a strong start to the second half, Mosgiel equalised in the first minute when Joe Quilliam released Ewan Bakker, who delivered the perfect cross for Andreas Hirczy to score.

Southland restored its one-goal advantage five minutes later when Atain Haley scored.

Mosgiel's Jesse Wright was doing a good marking job on the dangerous Waikano to keep him quiet.

On 60 minutes, Bakker again played an excellent ball into Sam McCauley, who rounded the advancing keeper, Elliott Binks, to slot home to equalise.

In the 90th minute Southland was reduced to 10 men for a second yellow card offence, and two minutes into injury time further red cards were flourished for another Southland player and Mosgiel's Morgan Day as tempers rose in a final flurry to find a winning goal.
