Southern considers appeal

Southern United is considering an appeal after losing points in the national youth league.

The club has had its 2-1 win over Tasman United turned into a 3-0 loss because of an error in filling out the team sheet.

Southern had left one of its reserves off the sheet and then tried to substitute the player on.

The match referee and fourth official allowed that to happen and the player was on the field for about 10 minutes. At that point, the officials were alerted to the error and the player was taken off.

The ruling overturning the result came through on Friday, nearly two weeks after the game was played.

Southern had a week to consider whether it would appeal, with a financial cost if it did.

Sean Hamill, the manager for all Southern United's teams, said the team was disappointed with the outcome. He said from the club's perspective, the officials probably should have picked up the situation initially.

However, once they did, they tried to correct the error. The club had also owned up to the mistake, although had not expected to lose points over it.

``It's one of their two wins. Before the weekend, it was their only win of the season. That was overturned, [so the team is] naturally disappointed.

``Basic human error is basically all it was, nothing malicious.

``It was an away trip, so they knew the 16 players they were taking away with them and had available.

``It was just simple human error for missing someone off the team sheet, which is why it seems so harsh and a bit disappointing that they'd lose their points due to that.

``But they've made their decision.

``I think there's possibly a couple of factors they haven't considered, which is why we're looking at an appeal.''
