Southern United  started its national futsal league title defence  with a win and a draw.

The side drew 4-4 with Canterbury United on Saturday, before bouncing back with a 6-2 win yesterday at the Edgar Centre.

It had been a strong start from Southern, shooting out to a 2-0 lead, before the sides traded goals to go to halftime 3-1.

In the second half though, Canterbury hit back with three goals of its own, Southern only managing one.

The response in yesterday’s game could not have been better though.

Lewis Wall scored twice as Southern claimed a convincing three points in the weekend’s second game.

After Canterbury took the early lead, Wall scored twice within the first 10 minutes to put Southern 2-1 up.

That was how the score remained until halftime, before Southern blew the game open in the second half.

Aron Tapp and Tennessee Kinghorn both scored to make it 4-1, before Thomas McGowan pegged one back for Canterbury with seven minutes to play.

However, this time it was unable to pull off the comeback.

Thomas Peterson responded straight away for Southern, before Ben O’Farrell put away a sixth goal with one minute to play.

Southern’s next games will be in Christchurch against Central and Capital as the southern travelling series continues.
