Some classy old-stagers will be doing their best to go low at St Clair today.

The club is holding its second pro-am, featuring 41 professionals in a field of 136, as part of the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Legends Tour.

The one-round event is for professional golfers aged 50 and over, and while multimillionaire Steven Alker could not quite make it home, there will be some very decent players on the course.

Headlining the event is the great Peter Fowler, winner of 20 professional tournaments.

Fowler (64) is in decent form, too, having tied for sixth at the recent legends pro-am at Waihi, and won the legends pro-am at Royal Auckland and Grange.

Another in top nick is fellow Australian Chris Taylor, who won the Waihi pro-am just a week after winning the equivalent tournament at Muriwai.

A third Australian, Murray Lott, comes in fresh from his victory in the two-round Hanmer Springs pro-am, shooting 63 and 67.

New Zealand contenders include Peter Giles, former Australian PGA seniors champion Martin Pettigrew, and Otago Golf Club professional Mike Henderson.

The professionals at the St Clair tournament play for a purse of $12,500, while the amateurs play a team format with the best two scores on a hole counting for team prizes.

The event has a shotgun start at 11am.

After the St Clauir tournament, there are legends pro-ams at the North Otago (Friday) and Tokarahi (Saturday) courses.
