A project nearly 50 years in the making came into fruition at the Taieri Lakes Golf Club yesterday.

The club opened two new holes, replacing the old 16th and 17th ones on the hill with a new seventh and eighth.

Club committee member Brett Kennelly said the concept had been to create a flatter course.

He said the holes, a par 3 on the seventh and a par 4 on the eighth, would be interesting to play.

Each would have lakes around them and former New Zealand Open winner Mahal Pearce had been involved in their design.

Kennelly said it was an exciting time, especially given the work that went into making them.

It has been in the works since 1974, when the last set of holes were developed.

"It was always the club’s intention to create two more holes on the flat when land became available," he said.

"It just took a long time to obtain all of that land because it was owned by two or three parties.

"Then, of course, we had to raise funds to develop the land."

A former gravel pit, the land had been used by Fulton Hogan, which finished extracting the gravel in 2017.

After that the club acquired the land.

Greenkeepers Tim Mitchell and Waine Dackers worked with contractors to shape and sow the tees and greens.

The green on the 17th was laid down two years ago, while the 16th went down a year ago.

Kennelly said the club’s members had been significant in the development.

There had been numerous working bees and fundraising tournaments.

The club had obtained trust funding too, ensuring it was able to construct the holes without going into any debt.

As they opened, Kennelly said alongside excitement, there might be a few nerves among the players as well.

"I think there’s a bit of apprehension.

"You’ve got to go over and around water on each of them.

"They should be very playable by members — they should be quite good."
