Cromwell’s Inia Logan has made his mark in the Queensland amateur championship, making the final of the matchplay having qualified in 10th place in a large, star-studded field.
He lost two of the first three holes to Redcliffe’s Doug Klein but competed well throughout the final before losing on the 17th green.

He beat Brookwater golfer Louis Dobbelaar by 3 and 2 in the first round before beating Jed Morgan (Royal Queensland) by 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals.

Logan’s third win was also by a 2 and 1 margin at the expense of Lochie Coleborn (Mt Coolum Golf Club) before suffering his first loss to Klein in the final.

Logan carded 77, 75, 77 and 69 to qualify 10th off the black tee blocks on the Pacific Harbour course.

The top qualifier was Kade McBride (Sanctuary Cove) on 282, nine shots ahead of Charlie Dunn (Pelican Waters), who came in second.

Logan has been in Australia for the last two months and is staying on to compete in more tournaments, including the Queensland Open. He is spending three months across the Ditch playing as many tournaments as he can as he looks to improve his game.

Unfortunately he will still be in Australia at the start of next month and is unavailable for the Otago under-19 and under-16 team which will compete in the national junior interprovincial at Cambridge on October 2-6.

Logan played at No 3 in the Otago team which finished second to Wellington in the Toro event in New Plymouth last year and will hopefully be available for this year’s event.

The New Zealand under-19 representative has amassed a creditable strokeplay record in recent years and now, after beating some of Australia’s best amateurs, is becoming a master of the matchplay format.
