Golf: Cromwell, Chisholm Park for qualifiers

Chisholm Park and Cromwell are among the venues for regional qualifying events for the New Zealand Open next year.

Up to 25 spots in the final qualifying stage will be up for grabs, depending on the numbers at each venue.

Chisholm Park, Whitford Park (Auckland), Paraparaumu Beach (Wellington) and Christchurch will host the regional events on January 27.

The final stage of qualifying will be held at the Royal Auckland and Cromwell clubs on March 9.

Eight spots will be up for grabs in the field for the Open, which is being played at The Hills and Millbrook in a pro-am format from March 12 to 15.

''While the BMW New Zealand Open has become the most unique in the world, it's important to remember that it is in fact an open championship,'' New Zealand golf general manager Dave Mangan said.

''This qualifying series shows that the amateur golfer or club pro's dream of playing in their national open is still very much alive.''

The return of the regional qualifiers for the New Zealand Open proved very popular earlier this year.

More than 200 players entered the four events to chase the dream of playing in Arrowtown, and the organisers are hoping for good numbers again next year.

The courses for regional qualifying have been selected with history in mind - they are all former hosts of the New Zealand Open or New Zealand amateur championship.

''We have got a great line-up of courses hosting qualifying again, with many of them steeped in history and tradition,'' Mangan said.

The top 10 amateurs on the New Zealand Golf Order of Merit and the top 50 players on the New Zealand PGA Order of Merit are exempt from the first stage of qualifying.

The New Zealand Open is a tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia. It has an overall purse of $1 million.
